Our History

Peter Young, our managing director, has been working in the flooring trade since leaving school at the age of sixteen. When Peter tells you that he has a lifetime's worth of knowledge of our trade, he is certainly not making any fictitious claims! Some thirty five years down the line, there is very little that Peter hasn't seen or heard of in our industry.

Peter began his career in 1975, as a salesman with Grove Carpets & Bedding. Peter was appointed the general manager of the Grove Carpet & Bedding Centre in 1980.

Several changes took place in Peter's personal life over the next few years, firstly his marriage to Maureen and the birth of his first child - Paul. Finally in 1986, Peter was made a partner in Grove Carpets & Bedding.

Peter held his position as a partner for thirteen years. During this time Peter & Maureen's family grew with the arrival of two daughters - Kirsty & Katie. Change was on horizon once again, as in late 1998, Peter came to the decision that he would now like to go - it - alone and start his own company.

On 1st June 1999, Peter Young Flooring opened it's doors for the first time. Taking his knowledge of the carpet trade and his own personal thoughts on how a carpet company should operate, Peter set about putting his stamp on the premises & company that many people in Edinburgh once knew as Grove Carpets.

With his wife, Maureen, a director of the company working with him, Peter began to build the business. Mike Parker & Billy Brown (our foreman fitters) joined the company in the year 2000. Both Mike & Billy served their floor-layer apprenticeships with Peter whilst he was general manager of Grove Carpets. With Peter, Mike & Billy, the company benefit from over 100 years of combined experience in our industry - further demonstrating our comprehensive and extensive knowledge of our trade.

In early 2004, Peter's son Paul joined the company. Paul has since dragged the company into the 21st century by introducing a company website and also the use of email communication with customers.

Recently, Paul has been responsible for overseeing the major refurbishment of our Edinburgh showroom. This comprised the conversion of our basement storage area into much needed additional showroom space and an extensive overhaul of our main showroom area.

Professionalism, genuine advice, an honest opinion, great service and fair pricing are the basis upon which Peter has built his business. Peter's personal belief is that every business should be run in the same way. Peter bases his business principles on three short words:

• SERVICE - It is of paramount importance
• CIVILITY - Its essential to be pleasant, fair & reasonable with people
• SATISFACTION - What we aim for with every job undertaken

These three principles have been the back-bone of the company since its inception.

They will also be the principles that will drive us forward for many years to come.
